Anyone recognize this seed?

Posted by azpedsrn Arizona (My Page) on

Sunday I found one of my dogs chewing on one of these seeds/pods. Tuesday I found a different dog chewing on another one of these. I have no idea what they are or where they came from. The are strong smelling when wet (that's how I found the first dog chewing on this - I went looking to find the smell) and smell like they'd be in the squash family - smell kind of "pumpkiny" but worse. Does anyone have any idea what they are?

It looks like something that would come from a palm tree.

Oh wow, really? I never thought of that but we have a small palm tree in our yard and our neighbor's Queen Palm hangs over our fence. I'll have to go out in the morning and look closely at those palms. Thanks.

You are correct! My neighbor's queen palm has ripening dates that could easily drop onto my side of the fence. Thanks for solving the mystery.

Probably good for the dogs as they are full of nutrients! Smart dogs.
