Pruning Young Trees

I know anything young should be left alone for a while. However... I'm special

Last fall, I planted a Museum Palo Verde on the west side of my 3 year old tomato/pepper plot with hopes to provide filtered shade on the S/W side when it gets ridiculous. It is planted about 8ft from northern block, south is open for about 30 ft. Also, directly to the west I have an RV gate (trunk in question equidistant from veggie patch) I need to keep clear about 6 ft high from gate movement and my movement, east and west.

I hate to cut valuable branch/leaves off prematurely. But, I am trying to focus the branches on both shading the east veggies, while keeping the west clear of obstruction for gate movement.

I want to channel growth where it will remain, but the tree is only about 6ft high and wide. When is the best time/age to begin removing non-beneficial branches? I just (hand) trimmed today as there was growth facing downward.

I'm basically trying to maximize the growth pattern I imagined, without stunting the tree. I love the multi-trunk palo verdes, and I am trying to make it suit my shade needs without being obvious. THANKS!
