purple plum tree problem?

this spring I bought a purple plum tree at lowes and planted
it in my back yard.
It has white spots on some of the leaves, which looks somewhat like white paint.
what is this? A fungus? Can't find any info on google about white spots on ornamental plum trees.

I would guess--and without a picture it really is a huge guess--it was mealybugs aka wooly aphids. Got ants hanging around?
