Can anyone give me summary on the types of pomegranates trees that grow well out here? What should I expect from growing these? How big do they get? Do they provide share and so on? Anyone info on growing these in the east valley would be great!

the "wonderful" types do very well here in any part of the valley. They can grow to be 20ft tall. They do not grow as fast as some of the other desert adapted trees and it may take a few years, but ours will have more than 30 this year. (We started it as a 1 gal plant). You can get this variety even at the big box stores right now, but Berridge, and Baker's tend to carry them year round.

Are they messy trees? Do they attract certain pests? I know nothing about them. How invasive is their root system?

Only messy in late fall when they drop leaves, otherwise not bad. Leaf cutter bees seem to go for the leaves and you may have to grab the fruits before birds get to them. I dont think the roots are invasive but Im not sure, others may have more to say on that (all my poms are in pots).

I love pomegranates and agree with the others about 'Wonderful'. In previous gardens I also grew some of the ornamental types too (full sized and dwarf sizes). I don't think their roots are very invasive at all, but let's see if anyone thinks other wise. Murmanator, you're SO right about the leaf cutter bees loving the foliage. I rarely have any "damage" from them on my other plants, but the pomegranata seems to be their favorite. The damage is still minimal to me and doesn't seem to really bother my plants so I don't really mind it, but I did want to say it made me chuckle to hear someone else notice and mention it. Happy gardening everyone, Grant

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "Angel Red", All Poms do very well in our soils and climate, I'm taken back that there's no commercial growers in the State, but I'm working on that!
Here is a link that might be useful: Angel Red Pomegranate

Poms start going into production on the 4th year, some will set fruits on the third year, I have some in 5's that have fruit buds now
