Please help identify this succulent

I have a plant that was given to me by my neighbor and neither of us knows what it is. It has been growing very well in the pot I put it in, has sprouted new columns as well. I would like to know what it is and also if it can be moved out of the pot and into the yard, and also can it be split?

Hey, nice cactus. It's definitely a type of Cleistocactus. I have several species and really love them. Yours looks like C. strausii but if you do a search online or in your books you'll find tons of pics. There are a lot of species.

It's best to not divide them, but if you reeeeeally want to share it, you can try to divide it or take a stem cutting, let it air dry for a few days and then plant it up.

It's a very nice specimen. The common name is "snow pole" due to the white furry spines.
