Annuals: pull or prune?

They're supposed to be annuals, but I've had snapdragons live a couple of years. This year, I have some that were little transplants and are now well over a foot tall. I think I remember cutting them back and having them bloom again. Does anyone else cut them - or other annuals - back for a second bloom?

I gave up and pulled the petunias; they were leggy, sticky and had aphids on them. Still, I felt bad because they were still blooming their little hearts out.

What about other annuals that you stretch through the summer? And what are you planting now for color that can withstand the heat?
