Now is a great time to plant citrus. Keep in mind that you will probably need to protect their trunks from the blazing sun in summer by wrapping loosely with cardboard or burlap, or by painting with latex paint (any color) diluted 1:1 with water.

Before planting, moisten the soil a couple of days prior to digging. Loosen the soil with a shovel or fork and then dig a hole slightly larger but only as deep as the container. Backfill with native soil and use a 3 inch layer of organic mulcn on top of the soil to help insulate and slow evaporation. Water generously. The amount you apply will depend on the size of your tree. A tree with a 3 foot canopy will need about 11 gallons each time you water. This time of year water once every 3 days for the first couple of weeks extending to once every 6-7 days after that and probably for the rest of the summer.

There is no need to fertilize for the first year.
