This may sound really odd, but the bottle tree (not bottle brush) has messy clusters of brown seed pods that contain enough tannin that they clear the algae from fish ponds really well. they don't hurt the fish, they just color the water slightly, a sort of tea color. I used to have a fish pond that I was trying all sorts of things on to clear the water and then the nearby tree started dropping pods in it and I noticed that all the green disappeared. I had the only sun lit pond around that was completely clear. It was also full of fish and several turtles.

Woodrat responded to pool question with mention of bottle tree. Is that of the Brachychilton? Might anyone know of another tannin producer that would make a good shade for pool?

I got some water lettuce at Ponds, Plants, and More, as well as lots of hornwort and anacharis. They are keeping my pond pretty clear of suspended algae, but I still have string algae. I have used hyacinths in the past, but they never did well. They just kind of shriveled up. The water lettuce is doing well. I have it in my waterfall.

Rillito Nursery also has some water plants. I got some mint there and it is really doing well.

I am looking for water hyacinth to clear up my pond. I have it mainly for my bees, so dont want to filter and aerate it, but also dont want it to be stagnant. If I put in a few mosquito fish and some plants that like still water, it should be fine.
I have read that other people tried water hyacinth and it died. Based on my previous experience, with several ponds over the last 30 years, I say it needs very dirty water with lots of breakdown going on, and will die once it cleans up that water.
