I tried growing some in a big pot last summer. It put out a couple of stalks, and then just sat there. In the fall, I took a peek at it, and the rhizome wasn't much bigger than what I had planted. I plunked it back in the pot (I now wonder if I should have brought it in over the winter?) and haven't seen hide nor hair of it since. It's a cool looking plant if you can get it going. I don't think I was consistent enough with the water, but I know other people have grown it successfully here.

I've never grown ginger, but I think I'll try it based on some testimonials I found from people in Phoenix. It does seem to be a challenging plant due to our extreme climate. Here's one tutorial.

I was watering the pot that had my ginger in it today, and saw two shoots coming up, so it's alive and kicking!

I potted a large rhizome a couple of summers ago. I got some pretty leaves (like a canna lily), but the plant struggled and eventually succumbed. I think that they need more moisture, and that the direct, fierce summer heat was too much.

I'd like to try again (our new house has an Arizona room, which means: CONSERVATORY!!! So I'm going to work on increasing the humidity and see if that helps.
