Zone 9 -It is going to get hot really fast were you are at. I would not move them now. I would wait till about Oct or Nov when it cools down so they stand a chance of survial. How big are they?

Campy, thanks for your response. I thought I should probably wait until late Fall, too, but was not sure. These are mature, probably in the ground 8 years. We just pruned them down from 6' to 4' and I think they will look terrible if pruned shorter.

We trim our privets(7yrs old) shorter than my husband can reach over. He is 6'2". So I guess they are about 5'7 or 8 It makes for easy trimming(no ladder) and spraying. When you move them in the fall I would take them back down to about 4' . It will help with the move on your part and help the bushes recover from the shock. Privets have a large root system and they will need all the help you can give them but I think it can be done.

Thank you for the info. (We were happy with them initially, but now having grandkids come visit we cannot see them completely as they play in the yard, so instead of yanking them out we will try to move them - I have a problem discarding living plants!) Linda

Dido for me, I just can't bare to throw away or cut down plants. Hopefully they will all make it and if they don't at best you tried. Got to tell you, yesturday we finnally put the orange tree out of its misery. Should have done it 5 years ago but I just kept hoping it would just die and make the decision for me.

I just transplanted some Privet bushes and they're fine. I moved them to the north side of our porch. THey should do better there. My brother in law had them in the ground in full sun and they had a very hard time. not sure if it was the soil or what. From what I can tell, they transplant very well and aren't as easy to kill as you might think.
