I had/have them too. I dug around on the Internet and they appear to be a variety of aphid (I didn't save the link). A good spray from the hose seems to knocks them off.

I have a bunch of them too. Plants don't look damaged, but they do seem to be growing a bit slower than normal. I just released a bunch of ladybugs so we will see how it goes. It's quite amazing to watch them eat aphids.

Thanks sparklynrose & greendesert. I will try the ladybugs. Perhaps that is what is happening with my roses also. They were looking so wonderful, not they're stunted in growth, their leaves are pale and curled and what blooms they have are washed out!

I have the same problem with my tomatoes - they are definitely aphids. They also love roses. If you look closely at the rose flower buds, you will probably see clusters of them. Get some beneficial insects and watch them battle it out!

I also have small black flies hanging out on my roma tomato plant. I will try the hose and the lady bugs. This is my first go at growing, and I want to eat all the tomatoes hanging from the vine!!

I have been using the hose on the plants, the "black flies" are completely gone, but the plants don't seem to be suffering. I'm very anxious to get my tomatoes also!

I have them too and so does my mom. The hose seems to work pretty well but have to keep up with it or they're back in a couple of days. The numbers seem to be coming down though.

Same situation, the numbers are decreasing which is a good thing. But this morning I noticed some of the leaves on my Beefmaster are yellowing, not wilting but definitely yellowing. I'm not sure what is happening!
