pushing potatoes in the desert

How soon before the hot weather breaks in and about mid-September should potatoes be able to go in the ground? I have an uber dry high-temperature-swing microclimate and my instinct is to plant in weekly or so succession starting at the end of August. I have no specific varieties planned, but have a feeling that no matter what I try nothing will really work out unless I wait for mid-October. That's perhaps a two month period of uncertainty.

Any killing heat experience with potatoes in the Phx low desert or Tucson's three degree milder one?
