Artichokes

We were given some plastic animal feeders. They are about 5' long by 2' wide and 14" deep. They didn't work too well for feeding or watering our horses since they stand in them so, I was thinking about using them as planters.

I was thinking about possibly planting artichokes in them but don't really know much about them.
Do they have any pests including birds?
Can they take full sun in our summers or need some shade?
I don't think it is planting time yet but when is the best time to plant?
Would a planter that is only 14" deep be deep enough?
Are there any varieties that are better than others?

I think that would make a good planter for a couple of artichokes. Big ass plant with a long time to yield.

They look dead in the summer and do better with afternoon shade then.

Thank you for the info. I'm going to give it a try (at the right time of course). My husband said he can put wheels on the feeders and then we can move them under shade for the summer.
