My apple tree died; too late to replace it?

Hi all,

Sadly, one of my fledgling apple trees croaked (the other one, which is several yards away, is doing fine, so go figure)! Branches are absolutely leafless and brittle so I'm pretty sure there's no hope.

Anyhow, I'm guessing it's probably too late in the season to plant another apple and expect it to establish before the heat explodes, right?

So, either I wait till the fall to replace it or...maybe there is another type of tree that I could plant that would establish more quickly? I've been eyeballing those Potato Bush Trees with the purple flowers. But they're a bit more expensive ($40?) so I'd hate to buy one and have it croak during our summer.

What do you think? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
