Tree Questions

Hello all, I have some questions about desert trees. Last year I planted a couple of net leaf (aka canyon) hackberry trees on either side of a south facing window. I picked hackberries because I wanted fairly large but not huge trees that can take Phoenix weather and the incredibly rocky soil I have in my yard. I also wanted to put them close to my house and I had read that hackberries have non-invasive roots ad are easy to train. My questions are: Is there a good strategy for increasing the growth rate for these trees? (They grow pretty fast in the spring but not much at all in the summer.) Also, did I make the right choice? Are there better trees that can be put very close to a house and that can take Phoenix weather and very rocky soil?
