Most orchards here consist of citrus trees (grapefruits and "Arizona sweet"-type citrus, and tangelos primarily), peach and other stonefruit, and occasionally apples.

Tomatoes grow here, but usually die in the mid summer due to the heat if multiple precautions aren't taken. Melons, okra, and a whole host of other fruits and vegetables do well here, however.

Avocados notoriously die here in Arizona due to the frost and the sun. Growing them and getting them to successfully fruit is the holy grail of most tropical fruit growing / zone-disbelieving gardeners of the Sonoran Desert.

ya, the very same county extension that stated I could NOT grow HALF the edible garden we have for the last 2 years running ... your best bet is those who are actually SUCCESSFUL at edible gardening in the desert, instead of the tax leeches at the EXT office ...

For veggies go with the calendar mangledmind posted. I haven't referred to any of the other calendars since printing this one out.

To me irrigation is personal preference. For summer watering I've tried hand watering, using jugs, soaker hoses and now I'm using drip. Drip is where I'm staying but others might prefer soaker hoses. I just hand water in the fall.
