Home Depot, duh!

Just went to pick up a few things for my new garden. Mainly a few flowers and some perlite.

I couldn't believe that Home Depot got rhubarb plants in this week. Do they think we're going into an ice age or what? They must have an ordering person from MN or something. That and the strawberries! And cabbage, broccoli, kale plants! Oh, and long day onion sets!

Now, if I'm looking for strawberry plants in the fall, I won't be able to find them.

Can you even grow rhubarb here? I was considering trying next winter, thinking it might grow as an annual, just because I love it.

the veggies are brought in by the vendor so if it doesn't sell they don't pay for it although the salesmen are paid commision on what sells they often time just fill up the displays with whatever is in the truck. you'd be surprised how many people buy rhuubarb and other stuff that doesn't do well here dispite the advice of the associates.....

Onions = YES, w/ preventive measures

the rest NO WAY, NO HOW ... only winter here in the valley will the rest of that stuff grow appropriately ...

I live in Sierra Vista. 90% of the perennials they sell wouldn't winter over in Tucson let alone here.

They were actually selling individual green bean plants in a pot for $2.99.

Here in Northern Arizona, I sometimes think that the Home Depot orders for Phoenix! In Gallup, NM, the HD lost a big shipment this last week due to freezing. The HD there gets its orders through Albuquerque, which has the same Sunset Climate Zone as Sedona, AZ,(Sunset zone 10) while Gallup is more like Flagstaff, or Chinle, AZ, where I live.(Sunset 2 to 3) There must be a tremendous amount of waste. A little local awareness would make everything better for customers, not to mention their own bottom line!

HD was selling Avacado trees and Orange trees here in Camp Verde. Don't they know it snows here or do they think this is Southern California. I saw one guy acually buy one. Didn't have to heart to tell him it will be dead in 8mo. I guess they count on people like that to make a buck.

well, some of these my do okay in a greenhouse over winter, but summer time is killer ... maybe run a/c in the greenhouse?
