Plant it now before the heat of summer puts added pressure on the plant and you for maintenance. Keep it well watered. Figs in stress will first drop fruit and then leaves with out warning.

What if the high temperature is consistently over 100? Should I wait?

Planting it will allow the roots to grow outward and deeper than in a pot which is good for the plant. Even if the temps. are in the 100's the plant has a better chance to survive in the ground. Left in the pot you probably while have to water it twice a day.

if you haven't already, I agree plant it now. Also be aware that fig roots are especially tender. They do not like to be handled. Some trees like it when you spread roots out at planting time. With fig it's best not to do that. Just plant the whole root ball with as little disturbance as possible.
Once planted, remember that at first the roots are only in that little ball and so that is where your water needs to go. Continue watering once a day for a while, that's what that little ball was used to.

I am a newbie. In Spring 2010 I planted a fig tree from Baker Nursery in Phoenix. The plant was (still is) 3 feet high) - it hasn't grown one inch in 8 months. While it still gives new leaves, the older leaves are brown, brittle, and dying. The plant had a fig already on it when I bought it, which made me think (wrongfully I suppose) that the plant was in good shape. I have fertilized very little, and the tree has sufficient water.

Was it the summer sun? Too much water, not enough water, needs fertilizing? Any thoughts are appreciated.

How's your fig doing Newuser?

I think that planting your tree in the Spring...a good idea in most climates...was stressful for it. It didn't have time to put out a good root system and then got hit with 100 degree temps day after day after day.

If it survived the frosts...let us know how it is doing this year.
