In my experience, it may not pay to nurse them along all summer because they don't set fruit in 100+ temps. Just replant new ones in the fall. What do others think? But I've heard of people keeping them alive all summer.

Sweet potatoes oughta do just fine.

Agreed. I just planted sweet potatoes a couple weeks ago. I was a little bit late but hope to be okay.

Hot peppers or sweet? I have no familiarity with sweet but the hot peppers should grow all through summer, they need water of course, and will produce in fall/winter. Last year Christmas time I had lots of hot peppers on all my plants.

Also agree to give up the ghost on the tomatoes. It's a lot of work to keep them alive and they don't do well. Start over in late summer by either beginning them from seed indoors or I may try direct sow this year so they begin to come up when air temps begin coming down. Bottom line: it's all just a crap shoot! ;-)

If you keep the tomatoes growing over the summer, the some varieties will start setting fruit again when it cools off.

Others will not.

I'm with lazy; if you can keep them shaded and alive, they should produce fruit for you in fall when the temps drop. If you have a bunch to water all summer, then it probably is not worth it. Two or three, I'd try it.

Sweet peppers will produce, but the walls are thin and the plants *and* fruit sunburn. Hot peppers wilt in the heat, but have a better chance of surviving and making lots of peppers in the fall.

Sweet potatoes do well, regardless of summer; they just need water - like the rest of us. ;)

Speaking of SP's, I was at Bakers today and saw some fine-looking ones in pots for $4.19 each. Thought that was a bit pricey, but there were varieties I haven't seen elsewhere.
