Anyone have army worms?

In the ground at the base of our Palo Verde tree are what I'm guessing are army worms. The worms look alike and the cacoons also. Army worms feed at night, and for several weeks in May-June we see droppings under the tree. Every morning the ground is covered with tiny green cilendar shapes that I'm sure are droppings from something. However, we've never seen anything in the tree and it's hard to immagine enough worms to de-leaf our tree the way it is. The only time we see these things is when we water. We have a flower garden under this tree and nothing is bothering it, only the tree. Anyone have any ideas? Are any of you haveing a problem with your Palo Verde's? Could army worms have a foundness for them over my other plants?
