Q. about young apple tree

The guy who lives here in our rental bought an apple tree earlier this year. He put it in a big pot where it was doing OK, not terrific. Then he left for about 7 weeks and put it in a (mostly) shady spot. I checked on it and watered it when it seemed to be drying out. It appeared to be doing a bit better there, put out some new leaves, but then the heat kicked in and all the leaves started to wilt and die. I think that the roots are cooking and told him he could either dig a hole, plant it in the yard or dig a hole and sink the pot. He wants to take it *indoors*. I'm not big on that idea for a few reasons, water on the carpet being one of them. I also don't think the indoors is a great spot for an orchard tree.

What are your thoughts? Anyone have apple trees or expertise here? Btw, I think it's a Dorsett.
