Growing artichokes in Tucson

I want to plant artichokes in my garden and I can't decide which variety to try. I grew Globe artichokes on the Northern Coast of CA, so I am having a hard time picturing artichokes here. Anyone have success with artichokes and what variety did you grow?

I grew them - planted a 6-pack of something - they grew well enough, but it's too big a plant for me.

They tend to die back in summer and then resprout in the fall.

I do recall watching mine disappear into the ground as a gopher pulled ithem in and made short work of them. they are like candy to gophers so be sure to deal with them quickly.
sorry I don't recall the names of varieties I've tried, but all grew well... untill the gophers got them. Still, I did get a few too. --smiles his jolly smile--

A friend of mine in Lancaster, CA (same climate as you...high desert) got 70 chokes from 3 big plants, so it can be done! Good luck!! They grow them here in Coachella commercially but don't plant till fall, and they do die back in summer.
