With courage, fortitude, and pickaxe, out I go to be a planter

Tonight is the night to assail the raised flower bed, one major shrub, large gravel rocks etc. I was going to wait until Fall, but damn it, gardening is GOOD for me, and I want to plant with the rest of you all. I have wanted to garden for near twenty five years. I've been a rolling stone and then some.

I planted (pickaxe, child's rake, and shovel) herbs on the lower flower bed, and now? (I have attracted new birds to our yard and the herbs seem to be wonderful. They get light twice daily. The basil likes more water than the others...) Tonight, I take on the biggie.

My growing-up was in Spokane, WA with my father as guide to planter. Spokane is land of four seasons but plant only in one. I sure as hell never needed a pick-axe.

Fellow gardeners, I salute you.

hi carmkelly! DH is from the spokane area and we met in moscow, ID. yes, you don't need a pick-ax there! gardening in AZ is defiantly different. been here 12 years and still can't quite get it all right. there is always something new to learn.

good luck with your flower bed. keep us posted on your progress. as for me, i am in hibernation from doing too much work out in the yard since it is sooo hot! :)

I did it! I planted squash, cukes, eggplant, and cantaloupe. I also, yes, planted to tomatos and of course they hate the heat but are surviving, somehow.

I wasn't sure what to do with the clay dirt leftover from the flower bed. This sure is alot of work, watering, nursing, etc., compared to Spokane. Sometimes, I just go out and mist everything with a bottle mister. The cuke is doing the best of all, though the cantaloupes are coming in strong.

I got to admit, posting here strengthened my resolve. I fell backwards when I pulled up the shrub. I hit my head slightly but was as triumphant in as I did feel bad about pulling out a shrub for oh well. Thanks for the encouragement.

Good for you Carmkelly! Like Kazooie, I am kind of hiding from gardening in the heat. Unless it's a flower in a bed, I am not doing it. Like most of us, I am a transplant from the midwest (MO). I do have friends that have quite the garden out here, so I know it can be done I just don't think I have the patience. Kudos to you!
