Tree roots and septic system?

I recently moved to the Arizona desert and have a question regarding trees and my septic line. I would like to plant a tree close to my septic line to shade my home from eastern exposure, i.e. morning/early afternoon sun. The area in question is about 20' from my pool. Any suggestions for shade that wouldn't pose a problem for the septic system because of root invasion? Are palm trees invasive?

You should probably rethink that idea. As this article explains, plants here are nearly always thirsty and rooting around (pun intended) for moisture. That generally means their roots are going to invade your septic system and then you'll have a really big problem. Have you considered shade screens, awnings, trellises with vines, etc.?
