I have a large area that I would like to plant a pine tree.
Anyone know a good variety that will grow large and is good for the desert climate.

Mondell Pine (pinus eldarica)? It's popular in southern new mexico and west texas. Probably in arizona as well.

The Aleppo pine P. halepensis does well here. You can see several large species in Scottsdale along 68th Street S of Camelback. Another one that does well here is the Afghan Pine P. Eldarica which also does well here.

The Aleppo pine are the same type of pine trees you find in Italy and Greece which are grown also for edible pine nuts.

We have an aleppo, and like it a lot. It's very drought resistant, and doesn't seem to mind the heat.

It does drop a LOT of needles, so be prepared to do some raking as it gets bigger.

You could also consider the Italian Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) and Canary Island Pine (Pinus canariensis). The Italian Stone pine grows wide with a canopy diameter close to 30 feet and height about 40 feet tall. The Canary Island pine grows vertically eventually reaching 50 feet with a 25 foot spread.

Actually the pine that produces pine nuts in Italy and Greece is the Italian Stone pine-it's the pine that has an umbrella shape to it. It depends on what look you want, but the Aleppo pine has more of a rugged, artistic look while the Afghan pine is more symetrical w/ a classic pine shape.
