If I were to plant a small tree I'd do Texas mountain Laurel for those divine flowers and the grape soda smell, or a smaller citrus variety.

Have you considered an Ocotillo? They're beautiful and don't require much water once established.

cap78, go to your APS or SRP Free Shade Tree website and grab a free tree or three. They will be low water trees by default. I have a Willow Acacia, a Desert Museum Palo Verde and a Mesquite from the Free Shade Tree program through SRP, my utility provider.
