Almonds are very cold tolerant and you shouldn't need to cover your tree. In fact they need a substantial number of chilling hours to produce a good crop. Most need from 400 - 500 hours between November 1st and February 15th that are between 32° and 45° F.

Some varieties are self-fruitful, meaning they don't need a pollinator. If you still have the label that came on the tree it may identify the variety.

I have a self pollenating almond tree that I purchased about 4 months ago, potted it and set up a drip line to water. It's been doing great, up until 4 days ago when there was a problem with the drip line that wasn't caught. The tree is in full Scottsdale, AZ sun, and with 105 degree temps every day, the leaves dried up and have fallen off. New stems are still green, and there are still a few leaves left. Watering is back on. Did I do any long term damage? Thanks!
