Hello! Intro and advice

Hello!

Been an occasional lurker, and really are a novice at growing much of anything. We love gardens, currently have one planted with tomatoes, zucchini, onions, jalapenos, green peppers, basil, and sweet potatoes. Today, everything is pretty sun beat except for the sweet potatoes and basil, which are thriving!

We moved into a newly constructed home in Goodyear about 2 years ago and have done or back yard (see pics), and have installed a rock water fountain. We planted Hearts and Flowers around the fountain, in hopes it would creep up the fountain and provide some vibrant color to the fountain. Well, it sits pretty much in direct sunlight and the Hearts and Flowers keeps dying, despite being watered every day. Would love some advice.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion with those of us that are less equipped and knowledgable in growing things!

Hi Rick, sorry to hear about your Hearts and Flowers, but it really likes more shade. If you like tropical, how about bougainvillea, a vine would clamor up pretty quickly, or larger lantana? I like Yellow Dots, they grow quickly in sun or shade, although maybe not as colorful as you'd like. There are a lot of plants for you to choose from, just remember a little shade is good even for full sun plants and garden plants. Planting a couple of fast growing shade trees would give you a lot more options for planting in some shade, including your Hearts and Flowers. I just had a palo verde tree removed that came up on it's own years ago, didn't provide much shade, dripped seedlings constantly, and replaced it with an Emerald Green palo verde, love this tree! Your patio would look awesome with some pots filled with blooming plants. Larger pots are always best, don't go too small. Hope this helps, you'll get there!

nice patio- I moved here about 10yrs ago from S.Cal and it was a big learning curve. I agree you are going to need a little help. The best way is ck your neighbor hood see what does good and what you like, ask your neighbors what they planted. Everyone likes a complement and will be glad to share info. When you get a list then post on this site and you will get additional help. I agree you need a little color but you need plants that survive the heat. Do Not rely on the big box stores for info(help) they will sell anything they can.

I know your fountain isn't really a pool, but here's a link to plants that are suitable around pools. Many will be appropriate for your fountain and patio area.

Consider some of the water-loving natives

Yierba mansa might work. Plant it where some splashing keeps it wet and see where it goes. You can buy seeds.

Good advice guys! Really appreciate it and will get some plants posted that do well around our neighborhood. :)
