Bent chilean mesquite?

steenbean18

When we moved into our house, there was a small mesquite tree in the back that wasn't staked. It had bent at the base but straightened easily when we tried to stake it. After a year of staking, it still will not stand on its own and it "wants" to fall back to the ground. We see beautiful mesquites around town that grow parallel to the ground for several feet before curving upward. If we allow him to bend to the ground will he eventually grow like this also or will it be harmful for the tree?

Thanks!
