Oleanders

Could some one tell me what variety of Oleander to plant along a block wall. The one I've seen that I like is red or mauve and is more upright than round. Want it to be about 6ft. at maturity. How far apart should these shrubs be planted? Thanks

First, I have never, ever seen a mauve oleander. Second, oleanders are all about as wide as they are tall, unless they are regularly pruned. Are you sure that it's an oleander?
There is a kind of bougainvillea called 'Torch Glow' that tends to grow straight up, and has purplish-pinkish-red flowers. Maybe some pics of the plant you want could clear up the confusion.

I can't think of an oleander that would be just 6 feet tall at maturity. They want to be 12-20 feet tall and wide.

Even the so-called dwarf varieties end up larger than expected. I ripped out a hedge of a dwarf pink that was supposed to be 4 feet tall that was over 8 feet.

Meaning no offense but why would you plant oleander? They're dying all over the valley, and places the blight attacked earlier (such as Riverside, CA) are pretty much devoid of oleander now. I'd stick with something likely to still be around in 5 years.

dying all over the valley? I'd say that's a pretty big overstatement. I see plenty of places with healthy oleanders. It just doesn't seem to me that this hoopla about oleanders is that big of a deal, but maybe I'm wrong. I think oleanders can be useful plants in the right place. definitelly an excellent privacy hedge.

I will grant that it varies by neighborhood. The older central neighborhoods are very hard hit right now, and there are some areas not so bad - yet. But the experience of every city that's seen oleander blight is that it keeps spreading until they're all, or virtually all, dead.

RE: Oleanders

I love oleanders (I know, I know, LOL) and will be sorry to see the blight hit them hard. Ugh. I have planted a small hedge of the "minis" as an accent feature, but when I did it I figured they might not be around too long. We'll see!

For an area where I wanted more privacy with more of a guarantee they'll be around in several years, I planted good old hopseed Dodonaea viscosa. It's not as festive to me, but it should last a long time. You can always try oleander and if the blight gets it, try hopseed.

Let us know what you pick and how it works out. We'd love some updates!

Take care,
Grant
