Winter squash - is it too late?

I (wrongly) assumed that September was the best time of year to plant winter squash here in Tucson, then slacked off and didn't even plant them in September. Is it just too late now to try? Could I maybe mulch with black plastic or something to keep the soil warm, or would I just be wasting seeds?

"Winter squash" - a misnomer for sure. I understand it because lazygardens explained it (the squash can be *stored* for the winter) but it's confusing for sure.
