climming roses going crazy help!

I have grown roses a long time but this is my first with climming roses. I am growing them on a split rail fence and they are about 4 years old. Last year in Jan. I cut them back and they were gorgeous in the spring. Now they are starting to grow again after our summer heat. The problem I have is that they are sending up these hugh shoots from the top and middle of the bushes, about an 1" in dia. I have already tied back what I want along the fence, so what do I do about the shoots in the middle I don't want. Those shoots grow a foot a week. Do I cut them off to keep them in line with the fence top? Thanks for your help

With our Lady Banks hedge, we like to twine or braid those shoots together and make then lean over. Find a cane that is about the height you want, then grab one of those over zealous canes, gently bend it and twine with the shorter one. Braiding three of them together also works.

I answered your question on the Roses Forum. Yes, cut back the unwanted canes. Some climbers will naturally grow long canes even after a severe pruning whereas others will form a shrubby growth. Allow some new canes to grow in order to replace the old canes that die.
