Dragon Fruit variety to try

For those of you that grow dragon fruit, here is one you should try. It's "Dark Star" (also known as 9-S). It's one of Paul Thompson's crosses from the late 1990's. I just picked and ate my first one today. Large fruit, slight grape flavor, purplish interior. Very sweet and juicy. The vine itself is very hardy and seems to handle the heat better than some of the others. I also had a variety called "Delight" set on its first fruit, very sweet, I recommend that one as well. I also had a Vietnamese white, Halley's Comet and Hylocereus Triangularis set fruit this year for the first time, with 2 "Alice" fruits still to ripen. It really was a great year for dragon fruit!

Wow, that just looks so juicy and delicious! Do you think that I can successfully grow dragon fruits in zone 6, southeast PA?

You'd have to bring them in for the winter, but they can be grown in big pots with some sort of trellis. They just need a lot of sun.

Do a search on Google for Dark Star dragon fruit, there are a few places to get it from. I think I got mine from someone at the AZ Rare Fruit Growers (their sale is Saturday 10/18 by the way!). Be sure you get cuttings or plants and not seeds. They are very easy to grow, just need a little shade in the summer if you're in the metro Phoenix area.
