Hi. I'm new to this forum and have a question for you experienced gardeners out there. According to this site's selector, Tucson is Zone 9. Do you feel that's an accurate rating, or do different parts of the city fit other zones better? I'm in Central Tucson. Just wanting to be sure I'm using the correct zone. Thanks!

The hardiness zones issued by the USDA only take into consideration the low temperatures that plants can withstand. Here in the Southwest, our alkaline soils and high summer temperatures are also a factor. In central Tucson you are probably in USDA zone 9a. I like to use the climate zones compiled by Sunset Magazine. They are more region specific - Tucson would be in Sunset zone 12.

Hey there, Going by zone 9 seems to work for me. The Sunset zone info helped me so much I ended up getting a subscription to the SW edition of Sunset mag! Between choosing plants for zone 9 / Sunset 12 and *alwaysalwaysalways* checking how much water the plant needs, (no plants needing "moist soil" ever - no matter how beautiful they are) - I've had *much* more success than when I first moved here. Good luck :)
