Red, silver reflective mulch

Thank you to whomever posted the "Sweet tomato test garden".

An essay written in 2002 Ms. Doyle mentions the silver reflective mulch. Never heard that before. Also, she only covers the fruits exposed to our sun and not the entire plant. From what I have gathered most gardeners here put a 50% shade cloth over the entire garden. Not plant / plant.

Question: Has anyone tried silver mulch in AZ? Red mulch?

The silver reflective mulch? Wouldn't that get just too hot?

In the winter one year, I used aluminum foil on the surface of my dirt to reflect light for my pot tomatoes. Seemed to help a bit. I got some tomatoes to eat in December and January.
I wouldn't use any colored or silver mulch on a regular, spring/ summer garden here but maybe on a winter garden especially if you don't have full sun?
