BTW, digging up the seedlings was not very successful. Out of the couple dozen, only 2 had a diggable rootball.

Like most desert plants, the wild cotton seems to send a taproot down several feet as fast as it can before it branches into feeder roots.

Planting in gallon pots, or straight in the gorund, would have a higher success rate.

That's okay. Even if I lose the plants, I am sure the seeds will thrive. Thanks!

Gossypium thurberi is one of my favorites too, such a fun shrub/small tree. I grew it for years and then removed the main poorly situated plant. Happily this spring some seedlings popped up and have become nice shrubs/trees with those pretty blooms and fairly decent (for here, LOL) autumn colors. Neat yours are self sowing so much. Great, great plants and very low water as you mentioned. Happy gardening!

Fun, LG, fun. They're surprisingly good for screening too. There's one spot in my hop seed hedge that was a little thin and I just crammed a seedling in there and it shot up to 5 feet this summer and filled the space nicely. I refuse to deal with picking up leaves, lol, so I cut them back HARD once the leaves start to fall, but they're really fun plants. I hope you get a lot of takers. You're so generous to share them out!

Most of the seedlings couldn't be dug up. The tap root is really long.

But I still have plenty of seed pods :)
