How wide is the concrete, from the plant to the neighbours?

You don't have to be that paranoid. The scenario you describe -- of a clumper spreading in that way -- is not realistic. You are ascribing characteristics of running bamboo to your clumping bamboo. Plant it where you want and feel free to quit worrying.

The concrete is about just 40cm / 1.3 feet wide to my closest neighbours garden.

I hope its enough space.

1.3 feet. It will eventually grow under that short of a disatnce of concrete unless it is deep, but even if and when it does, it won't run out of control.

Like Kudzu said, plant it and don't worry. New culms will emerge only a few inches from the existing ones, so if a culm comes up where you do not want it, simply break it off.

I think the worst that will happen is that some years from now, as the root mass slowly expands, it will finally contact the concrete edge and maybe begin to bulge a little around that edge. But it won't damage the concrete and it won't mysteriously make a run for it under the concrete!

Feels good to plant it in the ground and not have to stress too much. Cant wait for it to get bigger !! =)
