Are you sure that it is bamboo? might seem silly but it sounds like you are describing a large horsetail.

I was thinking Arundo donax. Don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but could you post a picture?

In addition to this thread being over a year old, the original poster was offering an invasive weed that he thought was bamboo. Trust me...you don't want this stuff in your yard. Stick with bamboo.
