Bamboo propagation

I have a beautiful clump of bamboo. The diameter of the entire clump is about six feet at the ground, with the older larger culms about 3/4 of an inch in diameter and ten feet tall.

I'd like to seperate the large clumps into many small starts.

What's the best way to do this?

Can I "chop" the hight of all the culms way down, to say just above the first knuckle, in order to make it easier to dig and seperate the ball?

Or is there a better way?

Thanks,

Richard
