Overwintering in containers?

I'm hoping to plant a couple of (relatively) small bamboos in containers on my new rooftop deck, partly for privacy and partly because I just like bamboos! The problem is that they would have to stay outdoors all year. I'm in zone 7a/b and we usually get at least one or two single-digit nights each winter (although our lowest temperature last winter was 17 degrees). I do have a sheltered spot on a covered porch next to the house that should protect them from the worst of the winter cold and wind. Can any of the hardier Phyllostachys species be grown this way? The two I was considering are the P. nigra 'Hale' and the "dwarf" form of P. bissetii.
