It should be do-able. Ph. nigra 'Hale" is supposed to be hardy to -5F, and the dwarf bissetii to -16F. This doesn't mean you won't get some leaf damage/loss above those temps, though, especially due to dessication from winds. And, the fact that they're in pots rather than the ground makes them more susceptible. One thing you could try if you know you're getting a really cold snap is to make a tent for each one out of plastic sheeting and tape it securely in place for a few days. Being on the covered porch will definitely help, and, if you keep them close to the wall of the house, they should pick up a little heat radiating from the wall.

I've overwintered the following species in big plastic containers: P. aureus, nigra,
vivax, and viridis. Had them next to the house. Last winter, I did not protect much and they were fine (mild winter). But in colder winters, I used tarps to help protect them from wind. Got them in the ground now so I don't have to worry about cold damage anymore.
