Thinning Culms

gpeppers

Greetings. This property is new to us (since November) and we are now the proud owners of a (small) bamboo thicket. The whole place has been neglected for a few years and is rather wooly. The bamboo is ...tall, small culms, thick, green, and doesn't seem invasive. However, I am under the impression that bamboo is happier if thinned? Besides pruning close to the ground to discourage culms from coming back, and/or pruning just above a joint to avoid holding water, and using a sharp tool that will cut the culm smoothly, does anyone have additional advice for a newbie? Feedback/input is appreciated! Thanks so much~ Julie & Andreas
