winter protection in cold zones

My bamboo plantings have experienced poor growth due to above ground die-back and defoliation during the winter. I'm assuming that this is mostly due to wind damage as leaves/canes toward the east end of my clumps show less damage (prevailing west winds) and anything below snow line is completely unharmed. This winter I tried fencing each clump in and wire-tying thick opaque plastic to the cages as a wind break. The wind took the cages, plastic and all, and threw them elsewhere on the property. Next year I'm planning on making large V's out of plywood with the point into the wind(west) and the bamboo in the crotch of the V. I'm also going to try using an anti-desiccant spray. My question, is there anything else you would suggest? And, what winter protection has been successful for you?
