Generally speaking, your soil sounds OK, but amount of light can sometimes affect a bamboo's growth.

As with other planting mulching may prove critical for good results. And as with other planting of long-term plants mixing in soil amendments at planting is not likely to be beneficial - most of the time this should be limited to cultivation of flowering annuals, annual vegetables and any other small plants with short lives and limited root systems that respond to abundant organic matter in the soil.

If you can amend the entire potential rooting area of the tree, shrub or long-lived perennial before planting there may be a case for this - although there will always be the problem of organic amendments decomposing over time, causing settling and a return to the original soil composition.

I guess I downplayed the sandiness of the soil - it's solid sand... almost like someone dumped a load of sand there!

Looks like Bambusa multiplex 'Al Karr' but can't be positive. Are the culms yellow with green stripes?

If it is Al Karr, then it can tolerate mostly shade but does best in full sun. Sandy well drained soil is OK as long as it isn't 'washed' sand. Mix in a lot of compost and you should be fine. Keep the soil moist.
