Ideas for Long Island Bamboo

Hi. I am looking to pot up some bamboo this spring. The plastic pots will be about 18-24" wide & about the same in height. I am looking for something that will grow tall (20'plus)& can take the winter when left out in the pots. The area is 50/50 sun & shade. Any ideas on which type I will have the most sucess with? Thanks.

I hope your pots are big--the bamboos will need it! Yes, you can do it--as long as you have your bamboos in a somewhat protected spot over the winter months (protected by the house or maybe some local shrubbery), in general you want to protect from winter SUN and WIND. Any plant is MUCH hardier in the ground, as opposed to a container, but it will overwinter with minimal damage (personal history here). Phyllostachys aureus (common Golden bamboo) and P. vivax and viridis, and Pseudosasa japonica have all overwintered for me in containers (now they're in the ground). Keep in mind that you are going to have regularly subdivide the boo once it outgrows the container. There are probably other species to try but I haven't the personal experience. P. nigra is a nice species, hardy into zone 7 (in the ground) once it gets established but might have issues in containers as it really prefers it a tad milder. Good luck!

I just reread your posting. Your looking for 20 foot bamboo in a CONTAINER!--What size 'pot' do you have?!--Won't reach 20 feet unless you have them in the ground.
