A picture would be most helpful. But... It could be moso, bambusoides, henon, vivax. All of those are members of the Phyllostachys genus and are timber bamboos. Thanks for the information. I still haven't identified their type, but I am trying two different methods of propagation I found in Wyman's Garden Encyclopedia.

Identifying the type is harder than I thought it would be. I didn't appreciate the number of bamboo types there are.
