repotting/dividing Golden Bamboo in containers

i've got 5 large (3'x2'x2') containers planted a couple of years ago with golden bamboo. they've shown good growth for each of the last 2 years. they took a hard hit this past winter with a two week period of very cold weather. i hope they'll make it this year.

anyway, next weekend i'm going to repot them all. my plan was to remove each batch from the containers, cut each batch (about 30 culms) in half, trim the roots a bit, then repot each smaller bunch back into the original containers (w/side insulation as per original planting.)

any suggestions/advice before i spend all of next saturday covered in dirt?

e.g. when trimming roots, shoudl I concentrate on the edges or the center?

many thanks.
