Not sure what you want the bamboo for, if you just want a cold hardy runner, you might want to try Phyllostachys atrovaginata. It's hardy to - 10 and may do well in zone 5a.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata is hardy to -15
same with Phyllostachys bissetii,
Phyllostachys nuda is hardy to -20

I have P.aureosulcata but I wanted a bamboo with larger canes, like Moso or something similar. I'm interested in altrovaginata but cant find any around here. Bissetti and nuda is simular to the sulcata so not so interested in that. Mzkrista

Hi mzkrista, I could send you some moso seeds if you want to give them a try. It will take longer than buying a 1 gallon division, but fun to watch them grow. You would have to shelter them next winter but could grow outside in pots this spring.

Extremely unlikely to do more than grow as an herbaceous perennial. In fact, few kinds of bamboo will be hardy there. Yellowgroove is seen in many places where others are not successful. Maybe get better results working on getting yellowgroove to grow larger, if it is not as big as it can get there already.

5b? Moso is a houseplant and winters inside

Thanks. Zone 5b is hardiness -15 to -10 and Zone 5a is -20 to -15. This is according to the US National Arboretum and USDA plant hardiness zone map.

Do you have a suggestion that could help my yellow groove grow better? My YG bamboo is around 13 ft high but canes not thicker than 1/2 inch. Maybe some fertilizer or something? Thanks Mzkrista
