All Bambusas like full sun here in Texas. I do have some planted in almost complete shade, but they don't grow as thick and get a bit taller. The leaves don't have the deep green colour that the plants in the sun have.

Your biggest concern is the soil alkalinity. I don't think it would be a big problem, but if it is, you could amend the soil, or have some brought in to plant the bamboo in. Its like well drained soil, but yet needs to be moist most of the time to tolerate the heat here.

Another idea, since the bamboo is a small one, is to plant it in a very large pot, maybe 25-gallon or even larger. The pot doesn't have to be deep, but a wide one is preferable.

I agree with Kentuck, your Green Goddess (Bambusa multiplex 'Riviereorum') should do OK in sun or partial shade. The multiplexes tend to spread out more at the top in full sun and be taller and somewhat straighter in shade.

Many bamboo prefer acid soil, but I expect your Green Goddess will tolerate your alkaline soil and do just fine. However, as Kentuck indicates, it would not hurt to ammend your soil. We have somewhat alkaline soil and water here, and I use an ammonium sulfate product to fertillizer my bamboo along with elemental sulfur pellets to help acidify the soil. I just broadcast it around the bamboo. If it does not rain, you will need to water the bamboo well at least once a week during the summer the first year, especially if it is planted in the sun.

The author did not make any reference to any of the subspecies of clumping bamboos, but my hunch is he might have been referring the the types that prefer cooler climates. (The book is old)
