I am in zone 9b and I have one shoot that came up very early, it is of b. vulgaris, it came up about 3 weeks ago. None of my other varities (all bambusa) have shooted yet.
To answer your question, zone and varieties do shoot at different times.

Thanks, botanicalbil. I have been told here via images I have phyllostachys aurea. It started popping up in a useful spot, though sparsely, half were eaten to the ground by squirrels, and now after this last torrential rain, I am no longer finding any new shoots. Could be squirrels, slugs, etc,or timing, so I thought I would ask.

I noticed that my b. asian lemon and b. seabreeze started to shoot a few days ago.
I am in zone 9b, so I get a longer growing season and have different varieties, I would wait about a month or so and I would bet you will have shoots. Some people on here recently posted very ingenious solutions to keeping squirrels from eating the new shoots.
