Planting Different Bamboo Varieties within Close Proximity

Hello,

Does anyone here have experience with planting different varieties of bamboo side-by-side? I have two B. Oldhamii planted in an oval bed and after some time I can see that they will be happy there, and will most likely spread to join as I hoped. The problem is that with our winters typically featuring a freeze or two in the 18-20 deg. F range, my winters and springs are all about nipped, brittle, dead canes and branches. It comes back, but fully half the year is a Bam-bummer.

I've thought about adding a multiplex or textilis variety right up in there with the Oldhamiis. In my mind's eye, I see half the year as beautiful...the other half magnificient.

Please advise.
